Getting More Work as a Tiler or Plasterer in Tyne and Wear and Teesside

22 March 20266 min read

Good tilers and plasterers are always in demand across Tyne and Wear and Teesside. Bathroom renovations, new kitchens, extensions, and new builds all need someone who can skim a wall or lay tiles properly. But plenty of skilled tilers and plasterers are not as busy as they should be, usually because they rely on word of mouth and do not do much to get their name out there. Here is how to change that.

Get on Google Maps

This is the single biggest thing you can do. Set up a Google Business Profile if you have not already. List your services (tiling, plastering, rendering, floor tiling, wall tiling, bathroom tiling), add your service area (Sunderland, Gateshead, South Shields, Middlesbrough, Stockton, wherever you cover), and upload photos of your work.

When someone searches "tiler near me" or "plasterer in Sunderland," Google shows local businesses on the map. If you are not on there, you are invisible to these searches. If you are on there with photos and reviews, you are ahead of 80 percent of your competition.

Photos are your best marketing tool

Tiling and plastering are visual trades. The difference between amateur and professional work is obvious in a photo. Take before and after shots of every job. A cracked, uneven wall transformed into a smooth, flat surface sells your plastering skills instantly. A plain bathroom turned into a tiled showpiece with neat cuts and consistent grout lines shows a tiler who knows what they are doing.

Upload these to Google, post them on Facebook, and keep a gallery on your phone to show potential customers when quoting.

Build relationships with other trades

Bathroom fitters, kitchen fitters, builders, and plumbers all need tilers and plasterers regularly. Introduce yourself to other tradespeople in your area. Drop off a few business cards at local plumbing merchants in Gateshead, Sunderland, and Middlesbrough. Let builders know you are available for subcontract work.

One good relationship with a busy bathroom fitter can keep you booked for months. They get the contracts, you do the tiling, everyone wins.

Price per square metre, not per day

Tiling and plastering are commonly priced per square metre, which is transparent for the customer and protects your earnings. For plastering in Tyne and Wear and Teesside, the going rate in 2026 is £12 to £20 per square metre for skimming over plasterboard, and £18 to £30 per square metre for re-plastering over old walls.

For tiling, wall tiling typically runs at £30 to £50 per square metre (labour only) depending on the tile size and pattern. Floor tiling is £35 to £55 per square metre. Complex patterns like herringbone or large format tiles command a premium.

Always quote materials separately so the customer can see the breakdown clearly.

Cover the right area

Tyne and Wear and Teesside are big enough to keep a good tiler or plasterer busy without driving more than 30 minutes to any job. Focus your marketing on the towns you can reach easily. If you are based in Sunderland, target Washington, Houghton, Seaham, and South Shields. If you are in Middlesbrough, cover Stockton, Redcar, Thornaby, and Yarm.

On North East Trades, you can list your business and appear in searches for every town you cover. Homeowners searching for a tiler in their specific area will find you directly.
