Gas Safe Registration for North East Plumbers: What It Costs, How to Get It, and Why It Matters

22 March 20266 min read

Adding gas work to your services as a plumber in the North East is one of the best business decisions you can make. Boiler installations, servicing, and repairs are in constant demand, especially through autumn and winter when the cold weather drives homeowners to sort out their heating. But you cannot touch gas work without being Gas Safe registered, and the process takes time and money. Here is what is involved.

What Gas Safe registration means

Gas Safe is the official register of gas engineers in the UK. It replaced CORGI in 2009. If you work on gas appliances, pipework, or flues, you must be on the register. Working on gas without registration is illegal and carries a fine of up to £6,000 or up to six months in prison. More importantly, poorly done gas work kills people. Carbon monoxide poisoning from faulty installations is a real and serious risk.

How to get registered

You need an ACS (Accredited Certification Scheme) qualification. This involves both practical and theory assessments covering the specific types of gas work you want to do. The main categories are CCN1 (core gas safety), CENWAT (central heating and hot water), CKR1 (gas cookers), and HTR1 (gas fires).

Most plumbers in the North East start with CCN1 and CENWAT, which covers boilers, central heating systems, and unvented hot water. This is where the majority of the work is.

Training courses are available at colleges across the region. Gateshead College, TyneMet College, and training centres in Middlesbrough and Darlington all offer ACS courses. The training typically takes 2 to 4 weeks depending on your existing experience.

What it costs

The ACS training and assessment costs between £1,500 and £3,000 depending on the provider and how many categories you are going for. Annual Gas Safe registration is £447 for 2026. You also need to reassess every 5 years to keep your registration valid.

On top of the registration, you will need public liability insurance that covers gas work (most standard plumber's policies do not, so check with your insurer), and you should invest in the right tools: a flue gas analyser (£400 to £800), gas tightness testing equipment, and CO detection gear.

Is it worth the investment?

Absolutely. A boiler installation in the North East typically earns between £1,800 and £3,500, and an experienced gas engineer can fit a standard combi swap in a day. Boiler servicing earns £60 to £100 per service and takes 30 to 45 minutes. A full diary of servicing alone can earn £500 to £800 per week.

The North East has a large stock of older properties with ageing boilers. The push towards energy efficiency and the ongoing phase-out of older models means demand for boiler replacements is not slowing down.

Building your gas work reputation

When you first get registered, start with servicing and smaller repair jobs to build confidence and a track record. Ask every customer for a Google review mentioning gas work. Within a few months you will have enough reviews to attract boiler installation enquiries.

List your Gas Safe number on North East Trades, on your Google Business Profile, and on any other directories you use. Homeowners actively look for it, and displaying it prominently builds instant trust.
