How Much Does a New Driveway Cost in County Durham?

22 March 20266 min read

A new driveway is one of the most visible improvements you can make to your home. It is also one of the most searched-for jobs in County Durham, Darlington, and the Tees Valley. Prices vary a lot depending on the material, the size of the drive, and whether the old surface needs ripping up first. Here is what to expect in 2026.

Gravel driveways

Gravel is the cheapest option. A typical two-car driveway in County Durham costs between £1,500 and £3,000 for gravel. This includes excavation, a weed membrane, edging, and the gravel itself. The downside is maintenance. Gravel migrates, needs topping up every few years, and weeds will eventually push through even with a membrane. It is also not ideal on slopes, which rules it out for some properties in hilly areas like Consett, Crook, or parts of Durham city.

Tarmac driveways

Tarmac is the most popular choice across the North East. It is hard-wearing, relatively affordable, and handles our wet weather well. A standard tarmac driveway costs between £2,500 and £5,000 in County Durham. The price depends on the area, the condition of the existing base, and whether any drainage work is needed.

Be careful with tarmac companies that knock on your door offering cheap deals. This is one of the most common doorstep scams in the region. Always get quotes from established, reviewed businesses.

Block paving

Block paving looks great and adds real kerb appeal, but it costs more. A two-car block paved driveway in County Durham typically costs between £4,000 and £8,000. Premium patterns, borders, and higher-end blocks can push this to £10,000 or more. Block paving needs a proper sub-base and should be laid by someone with experience, otherwise it will sink and shift within a couple of years.

One thing to be aware of: if your driveway is currently permeable (gravel, for example) and you are replacing it with an impermeable surface like block paving, you may need planning permission unless the blocks are permeable or you include drainage to manage surface water run-off.

Resin-bound driveways

Resin driveways have become very popular in the last few years. They are permeable (so no planning permission issues), low maintenance, and look clean and modern. In County Durham, a resin-bound driveway costs between £50 and £80 per square metre, so a typical drive comes in at £4,000 to £7,000. The existing surface needs to be in reasonable condition, as resin is applied as a thin layer on top. If the base is cracked or uneven, it will need repairing first.

What affects the price

Size is the obvious one, but access matters too. If your drive is on a steep hill, or a digger cannot get to the site easily, labour costs increase. Drainage is another factor. Properties in low-lying areas of County Durham and the Tees Valley floodplain may need additional drainage channels, which adds £500 to £1,500.

The condition of the existing drive also matters. If the old surface needs breaking up and removing, expect to add £500 to £1,500 for skip hire and labour.
