Finding an Emergency Plumber in Newcastle or Sunderland: What to Do When a Pipe Bursts

22 March 20266 min read

It is a Sunday evening. Water is pouring through your kitchen ceiling, or your boiler has packed in and it is minus two outside. You need a plumber right now. But calling the first number that comes up on Google at 10pm is how people end up paying £500 for a job that should cost £150. Here is how to handle a plumbing emergency in Newcastle, Sunderland, or anywhere across Tyne and Wear without getting fleeced.

First: stop the water

Before you call anyone, turn off the water at the stopcock. In most homes in Newcastle and Sunderland, this is under the kitchen sink or in the downstairs cupboard. Turn it clockwise until it stops. If you have a burst pipe, this will stop more water coming through. Mop up what you can and put towels or buckets under the leak.

If the burst is on a radiator or heating pipe, turn the heating off and bleed the affected radiator to release the pressure.

If water is near electrics, turn off the power at the consumer unit. Do not touch any electrical fittings that are wet.

Finding a plumber at short notice

Start with plumbers you already know. If you have used one before or a neighbour can recommend one, call them first. Even if they cannot come out immediately, a trusted plumber might be able to talk you through a temporary fix over the phone.

If you do not have anyone to call, search on North East Trades for plumbers in your area. Every plumber listed has their Google rating and review count, so you can quickly spot the reliable ones. Look for plumbers who specifically mention emergency or out-of-hours work in their services.

Avoid companies advertising "from £29.99 call-out" in sponsored ads. These are often national call centres that subcontract to whoever is available, and the final bill rarely has anything to do with the advertised price.

What emergency plumbers charge in Tyne and Wear

A reasonable emergency call-out fee in Newcastle and Sunderland is between £80 and £150 for evenings and weekends. This covers the plumber turning up and diagnosing the problem. Parts and labour to fix the issue are on top.

Common emergency jobs and typical costs: a burst pipe repair is usually £150 to £300 including the call-out. A blocked drain that needs jetting is £100 to £250. A boiler breakdown diagnosis and basic repair is £150 to £350. A leaking stop tap replacement is £120 to £250.

If a plumber quotes you significantly more than these ranges without a clear reason, get a second opinion.

Questions to ask before they arrive

What is your call-out fee? Is there a minimum charge? Are you Gas Safe registered (if it is a boiler issue)? Can you give me a rough idea of the total cost? Do you have public liability insurance?

A legitimate emergency plumber will answer these questions clearly. If they are vague about pricing or refuse to give an estimate, call someone else.

Preventing the next emergency

Once the crisis is over, take steps to avoid it happening again. Get your boiler serviced annually. Lag pipes in the loft, garage, and any unheated spaces. Know where your stopcock is and make sure it turns easily. Keep a note of a reliable local plumber's number in your phone so you are not searching in a panic next time.

On North East Trades, you can browse rated plumbers across Tyne and Wear, save their details, and have a trusted contact ready before you need one.
